Legalizing Drugs will help the economy

A very important issue that really does not seem to get a lot of attention in this country is the failure of the war on drugs. This subject is something that makes Dr. Babula stand out over all the other candidates for the 4th congressional district of Maryland, the legalization of drugs. In my opinion, this would be a terrific step forward for the U.S. economy because not only would it save our country money, it would prevent drug-selling on the black market and deaths as well. I, for one, am against drugs and the use of them. However, I feel that should drugs be legalized, the use and desire for the much more harmful drugs will die down. It will be a similar event to the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s, which led to illegal smuggling and higher crime rates. The legalization of alcohol brought the crime wave to a screeching halt, and a similar effect will occur with the legalization of drugs.

The main candidates against Dr. Babula, Donna Edwards and Albert Wynn, provide no answer to the issue of the war on drugs on their websites. However, Dr. Babula addresses the issue with great reasoning as to why it would help the economy. The black market affects the economy greatly, especially in the case of illegal drugs. All the money that the government invests into preventing harmful drug use is virtually thrown away because of cartels and the black market, where the drugs go for much more money then they are worth. Not only that, but these types of illegal movements lead to an increase in the crime rate, possibly even greater amounts of organized crime. Drug deals on the black market help increase murders as well. All of this shows that the war on drugs has had absolutely no positive effect on the country. It has had a negative effect at best, especially economically, where the U.S. government has spent 600 dollars a second on the war on drugs1.

Dr. Babula’s solution to legalize all types of drugs will lead to a decrease in all of these harmful aspects on society. Just as it had been done for alcohol in the 1920s, the black market and organized crime will no longer exist and prices for drugs will fall to their lowest possible point. The government can then use the money that would be used for the war on drugs on other helpful aspects, such as helping end the war in Iraq. The decision to legalize drugs would be beneficial to so many aspects of, not just our country, but also places like Columbia who are in the middle of a civil war over the war on drugs. With legalization, these drugs can be produced without any harmful consequences on anyone. Dr. Babula can help address this issue in Congress and it will be extremely beneficial to the American economy. It is important to realize that the American economy is in an extremely weak state, in which the dollar has fallen in value to that of the Canadian dollar. Steps like these will help the economy rise again and bring the dollar back to its highest value.

What about the issue of why these drugs became illegal in the first place? Aren't they considered extremely dangerous? Dangerous not just for the individual but anyone that individual might run into that night (no pun intended)? Would it not cost more in the long run to be cleaning up after these people than dealing with the black market?
I can see how someone in the government would want to legalize drugs and perhaps cause more deaths, especially with the rapidly growing birth rate. :)

Then again it might be good, if drugs are not illegal we have more space in jail, for insane creepy people who are terrible people.

To lttlekittykat, I see what you're saying, but the point of this country is that we are a free nation. It's obvious we can't prevent everyone from taking these dangerous drugs, since the war on drugs has failed miserably. My point is that, if we end the war on drugs, that money will be put to something more useful such as ending the war and pulling our economy out of debt.

I also think that it will take the rush or appeal out of "illegal" drugs when they're legal. It could just be like prohibition in the 1920s, look at statistics, alcohol usage is much lower than it was during those times. If you go to www.babula2008.com, he says the average use of alcohol is at its lowest point ever. I see what you mean, but I think that this is the better solution.

Babula is the man...we do need a change in drug policy though... Weed is cheaper then other medicines...and we can tax drugs to help the economy.

This a very strong argument and something I agree with 100%. Once the legalization of drugs is passed, use will be able to be regulated. It is very much like the prohibition. Half of the fun is the "high" of doing something illegal (no pun intended). And while I am on the topic of alcohol, I will say this: Alcohol is dangerous, unhealthy and causes major problems for many people and kills millions of people. However, it is legal. Any arguments used against drugs can be thrown right back at alcohol and yet, alcohol is still legal. The legalization of drugs would stop the illegal sales and dangerous encounters of drug buyers and dealers. By legalizing drugs, the government could in fact make money because they could sell it and tax it. All of the money that is being used for the war against drugs could be used for more important causes like cancer, the war in Iraq, starving children, animal abuse, etc. There are countless other things this money could be spent on and in my opinion, it is a waste of money (and energy) to spend it on the drug war. Go Babula! =]

screeching halt, eh? and the canadian dollar?! that's unfortunate. there was a lot of good points in this blog. however, i'm pretty ignorant to the whole drug deal and i'd be interested to hear the other side and that's not really represented. regardless, good luck to babula!

I agree that the legalization of drugs would be helpful to our country because then individuals would not see drugs as a way to rebel against societal controls and drug usage, or at least highly intense drug usage, would decline. Still, this is a risky standpoint to take because I feel most of the population would like to see drugs entirely erased from our culture.
